How to Stop Spam Comments on Instagram (2026)
Instagram has no single anti-spam switch, but a handful of settings together cut most of it. Two filter comments by what they say; the rest act on the accounts that post them. Instagram has renamed several of these settings, so older guides send you to menus that no longer exist. The names below are the current ones.
Steps checked against Instagram's own help pages on October 7, 2026. Menus move, so the sources are listed at the end.
How do you stop spam comments on Instagram?
Turn on Hide unwanted comments, add your own hidden words, and limit or restrict the accounts behind it. The filters also apply to your ads.
Filter comments by what they say
Content filters that work on every post and every ad from your profile.
- 1
Turn on Hide unwanted comments
Profile > Menu > How others can interact with you > Comments > Types of comments, then set Hide unwanted comments to Some or More.
- 2
Add your own hidden words
Under How others can interact with you > Hidden words, add words, phrases, numbers or emojis separated by commas in Custom words and phrases. Matching comments are hidden, including ones already posted.
- 3
Clear what's already there
On a post, open the comments, tap Options > Select multiple comments, then hide them, delete them (up to 25 at a time) or block the accounts.
Act on the accounts behind it
For waves of spam from new or unknown accounts.
- 1
Limit interactions
Menu > How others can interact with you > Limit interactions. Limit some or most interactions from recent followers or accounts that don't follow you, for up to 4 weeks at a time.
- 2
Restrict an account
Press and hold its comment, then tap Restrict account. Its new comments are visible only to it unless you approve them.
- 3
Block repeat offenders
Blocking removes their likes and comments, and can also block other accounts they have or create.
What can't Instagram do on its own?
Instagram documents no filter for comments with links or from brand-new accounts; Facebook's Moderation Assist has both, Instagram doesn't.
- Hidden words only catch what you listed, so misspelled or newly worded spam gets through.
- In Ads Manager, Instagram ad comments can only be hidden one by one or reported.
- Hidden comments still count toward the comment total, and bulk delete stops at 25 at a time.
How do you stop Instagram spam comments automatically?
RYPL reads each comment as it arrives and hides spam by what it means, not by a word list.
- Spam, scam links and follower-farm promos are hidden on your Instagram posts and ads as they arrive, on every plan.
- Comments are classified by meaning, so new wording doesn't need a new keyword; your own banned words still apply, on every plan.
- From Pro, write moderation rules in plain words, such as hide comments with links to other shops, with review first if you want to check before it acts.
- Buyers' questions are answered, not hidden.
