How to Hide Comments on Instagram (2026)
Hiding takes a comment out of the thread without deleting it. On Instagram, a comment you hide is visible only to you and the person who wrote it, Instagram doesn't tell them, and you can unhide it later. You can hide comments one at a time, several at once, or automatically with Instagram's filters, which also cover your reels and the ads that run from your profile. In Ads Manager, Meta lets you hide or report Instagram comments but not reply to them.

How do you hide a comment on Instagram?
Tap Hide under the comment on your own post. Only you and the writer can still see it, and they aren't told. Filters can hide matches for you, on ads too.
Hide one comment in the Instagram app
For comments under your own posts. Instagram documents it in the iPhone and Android app, not on instagram.com.
- 1
Find the comment
Open the comments under your post and go to the one you want to hide.
- 2
Tap Hide
Tap Hide under the comment. From then on only you and the person who wrote it can see it, and they can't see that it was hidden.
- 3
Unhide it if you change your mind
At the bottom of the comments, tap View hidden comments, then tap Unhide under the comment.
Hide several comments, or one account's comments
For a wave of comments on one post, or one person who keeps coming back.
- 1
Select several at once
Tap Comments below your post, then Options in the top right > Select multiple comments. Pick the comments and choose Hide comments, Delete comments or Block accounts at the bottom. Deleting stops at 25 comments at a time.
- 2
Restrict one account
Press and hold one of its comments and tap Restrict account. Its new comments are visible only to that person until you tap See comment, then Approve.
- 3
Block one person from commenting
Profile > Menu > How others can interact with you > Comments. Next to Block comments from, tap People and block them. Their new comments are visible only to them; earlier ones stay until you hide or delete them.
Hide comments automatically with filters
Set once on your profile. Instagram applies them to your posts and reels, and Meta extends them to ads from your profile.
- 1
Set Hide unwanted comments
Profile > Menu > How others can interact with you > Comments. Under Types of comments, tap Hide unwanted comments and choose None, Some or More. It's on by default.
- 2
Add your own Hidden words
Under How others can interact with you, tap Hidden words, then Add words separated by commas… and enter words, phrases, numbers or emojis.
- 3
Review what was hidden
Filters hide new and existing comments that match. Tap View hidden comments at the bottom of a post's comments, tap a comment, then Unhide to bring it back. Turning a filter off restores what it hid.
Hide comments on an ad built in Ads Manager
For ads that aren't on your grid. Instagram comments can be hidden or reported here, not answered.
- 1
Open the ad
In Ads Manager, go to the Ads tab, find the ad and click Edit below its name.
- 2
Open its Instagram comments
Click … to the right of the ad's name in the left column, then More options > Manage Instagram comments. This needs an Instagram profile connected as the ad's identity.
- 3
Hide or report
Click … next to a comment and choose Hide comment or Report comment. Meta says the same tools are in your Instagram notifications.
What can't Instagram do on its own?
Instagram's filters work on wording, not meaning: Hide unwanted comments catches common offensive words and phrases, Hidden words only what you listed, and there's no documented filter for links.
- Hidden comments still count toward the comment total, and Instagram's help says other people can still choose to open comments hidden by filters from View hidden comments.
- Outside partnership ads, Ads Manager only lets you hide Instagram ad comments one by one or report them, and Meta's help doesn't say how to unhide one there.
- If the ad runs under your Facebook Page identity only, its Instagram comments can't be managed in Ads Manager at all.
- Reporting a comment hides it from you, not from everyone: Instagram says a report doesn't mean the comment was removed.
Can Instagram comments be hidden automatically without word lists?
Yes, with RYPL: it reads new comments on your Instagram posts and ads as they arrive and hides spam and hate by what they say.
- Spam and hate on your Instagram posts, reels and ads are hidden automatically, on every plan. RYPL's AI spots spam in about 1.7 seconds on average (RYPL's own measurement), and the comment is hidden within seconds.
- Banned words and author blocking on every plan. Filter by tone on each channel is Off by default and can hide or delete negative comments, or all comments, if that's your policy.
- From Pro, write moderation rules in plain words, such as hide comments that promote other shops, with review first if you want to see the matches before RYPL acts.
- Hidden comments can be unhidden, and buyers' questions get an answer from your knowledge base instead of being hidden.
