How to Respond to Negative Comments on Facebook (with Examples)
A negative comment under a post or ad is read by everyone who scrolls past it, so the reply is for them as much as for the person who wrote it. Meta's own advice is to address comments directly, negative and positive. In Sprout Social's 2025 research, 73% of social users said they'd buy from a competitor if a brand doesn't respond, and about half of people who complain publicly expect a public acknowledgement first.

How should a business respond to negative comments on Facebook?
Reply in public to real complaints, briefly and calmly, then move the details to a private message. Hide abuse and spam; don't argue.
Decide: reply, hide or delete
Criticism gets an answer; abuse and spam don't.
- 1
Reply to genuine complaints
A late order, a broken product or a confusing price deserves a public answer. Left alone, it reads as true to everyone else in the thread.
- 2
Hide abuse, spam and scams
Open the comment's Options (…) and choose Hide comment. The writer and their friends still see it, nobody else does, and its replies are hidden too.
- 3
Delete or ban only for repeat abuse
Deleting removes the comment for everyone. For accounts that keep posting abuse, ban them from the Page under Settings > Blocking, and report content that breaks Facebook's Community Standards.
Write the public reply
Short, specific and human, with a way to continue in private.
- 1
Acknowledge the specific problem
Name what went wrong in their words, not a generic sorry.
- 2
Say what happens next
Give one concrete next step: a refund check, a replacement, a tracking update.
- 3
Move the details to a private message
Ask them to check their messages, then send one private reply. Facebook allows a single private message per comment, within 7 days; the conversation continues if they answer.
What can't Facebook do on its own?
Facebook can hide comments automatically by word, link or account, but it can't tell a frustrated customer from a troll.
- Filters and Moderation Assist hide; they never answer.
- A hidden comment stays visible to its writer and their friends, so a hidden complaint isn't a resolved one.
- Private replies are limited to one message per comment, within 7 days.
